10 Things Authentic Servant Leaders Do
How Would the Person You'd Like to Be Do the Thing You're About to Do?
Authentic servant leadership is about being truthful to yourself and in service to others. It's about being the person you know in your heart you are supposed to be. Authentic servant leadership does not come from your title nor from the size of your paycheck. Instead, this form of leadership comes from your being and the person that you are.
Here are 10 things that authentic servant leaders do on a regular basis:
1. They speak their truth. In business today, we frequently 'swallow our truth'. We say things to please others and to look good in front of The Crowd. Authentic leaders are different. They consistently talk truth. They would never betray themselves by using words that are not aligned with who they are. This does not give anyone a license to say things that are hurtful to people. Speaking truth is simply about being clear, being honest, and being authentic. Since they know that there is always a way to succeed authentic servant leaders are not afraid of the truth.
2. They serve from the heart. Leadership is about people. The best leaders genuinely care about others and spend their days in service to people helping them develop and grow as leaders. They are like the sun: the sun gives away all it has to the plants and the trees. But in return, the plants and the trees always grow toward the sun.
3. They have rich moral fiber. "Who you are speaks louder than what you say". Strength of character is true power -- and people can feel it a mile away. Authentic leaders work on their character. They walk their talk and are aligned with their core values. They are noble and good. And in doing so, people trust, respect, and listen to them.
4. They are courageous. It takes a lot of courage to go against the crowd. It takes a lot of courage to be a visionary. It takes a lot of inner strength to do what you think is right even though it may not be easy. We live in a world where so many people walk the path of least resistance. Authentic leadership is all about taking the road less traveled and doing, not what is easy, but what is right.
5. They build teams and create communities. One of the primary things that people are looking for in their work experience is a sense of community. In the old days, our community came from where we lived. We would have block parties and street picnics. Today people seek their sense of community and connection from the workplace. Authentic leaders create workplaces that foster human connection and lasting friendships.
6. They deepen themselves. The job of the leader is to go deep. Authentic servant leaders know themselves intimately and are constantly improving. They nurture a strong self-relationship. They know their weaknesses and play to their strengths. They seek discomfort only to grow through it. Their comfort zone is outside their comfort zone.
7. They are dreamers. Einstein said that "Imagination is more important than knowledge." It is from our imaginations that great things are born. Most people stopped dreaming at some point in their life but authentic servant leaders empower themselves to begin dreaming again. They spend time dreaming of ideas that motivate, inspire and create a better life with deeper value for people. While others may say, "that's hype" or "you're unreasonable" they continue undaunted to dream the impossible dream.
8. They care for themselves. Taking care of your physical dimension is a sign of self-respect. You can't do great things at work if you don't feel good about yourself. Authentic leaders eat well, exercise, and care for their bodies. They spend time in nature, drink plenty of water, and practice preventative health care so that, physically, they are operating at world-class levels of performance.
9. They commit to excellence rather than perfection. No human being is perfect. Every single one of us is a work in progress. Authentic servant leaders commit themselves to excellence in everything that they do. They are constantly pushing the envelope and raising their standards. They do not seek perfection and have the wisdom to know the difference. They are constantly evaluating and improving. What would your life look like if you raised your standards well beyond what anyone could ever imagine of you?
10. They leave a legacy. To live in the hearts of the people around you is to never die. Success is wonderful, but significance is even better. You were made to contribute and to leave a mark on the people around you. In failing to live from this frame of reference, you betray yourself. Authentic servant leaders are constantly building their legacies by adding deep value to everyone that they deal with and leaving the world a better place in the process.
How About You?
What would your life look like if you had no fear of what other's thought of you? What kinds of things would you do if you lived from a frame of reference that your thoughts literally could form your world? How brightly would your light shine if you stepped out of the limitations that may be keeping you small, and stretched yourself well past your comfort zone into the place that you know, deep within, you are meant to be?
Be your best...

What to Do Next?
Keep it Simple. Recruit Up. Do it Now.
During preview and pre-launch you want to approach and invite high-caliber, business-minded people. This is definitely not the time to invite the consumer to look at the business. We'll show you how to find, introduce and enroll people during this very exciting time.
Step 1 -- Create a List
Objective: Organize the names of people you know
You know between 10 and 40 people you can contact right away, and that's a great list. You also know between 5 and 20 people you are afraid to call, and that's a better list. Sometimes called your "chicken list" it's also your list of high-caliber business minded professionals.
Put both lists together and then take the next step.
Step 2 -- Quick Call
Objective: Establish a strong posture and create urgency and curiosity when you introduce people to the opportunity.
Here's a simple script that works. Use your own words and remember to keep the posture that you have something amazing.
"Hi, Sally. I'm calling for business but first I want to catch up. How are you?"
If they are not home you can leave the following on their voicemail:
"Do you have a pen? Write this number down, 712-432-9440. Listen to the message on that number and I'm going to send you an email. I'll call you back in a bit. It's about business."
The only rule: "Only say what someone else can say, five minutes after you say it."
If you mention Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms or genetic propensity or binary compensation, you're breaking the only rule.
Step 3 -- Send an Email
Once you've spoken or left a message send a quick email like this:
Subject: Our call
Hi ...
Here's the website I mentioned.
http://dnadoesntlie.com
Please look it over and call me back as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Me
Calling and connecting is a very important part of this process, but if you are absolutely terrified to talk to anyone you can send an email like this to get them to call you:
Subject: I need your help...
Hi ...
It's been a while. I hope things are going good for you.
I could use your help. I'm helping a 12 year old public bio-tech company launch a marketing division and they need a few key people. Do you know anyone who could help?
Here's an overview of who we are looking for: www.dnadoesntlie.com
If you or anyone you know would be interested, please let me know and I'll get you more information.
Thanks,
Me
It's much better to call first, but if you have too many people to reach or you're too busy, or you've gone through your initial 20 to 40 people and you want to reach more people on your list this email will do wonders. Use your own words and your own style, but don't say much more than what's in the email above.
Now is the time. Will you do your best or live like the rest?
